How we build

One standard, independently checked

Every Symbio home is designed to earn Built Green Platinum. Here is what that means and how we get there.

The standard

What Built Green Platinum means

Built Green Canada is a national non-profit certification program. Platinum is its highest tier, requiring homes to score in the top bracket across energy efficiency, indoor air quality, water conservation, materials and waste management.

Every certified home is assessed by an independent Energy Advisor and must meet the EnerGuide labelling requirements of Natural Resources Canada.

Built GreenTargeting PlatinumAbout the program

For you, that means one thing. Our green building claims are independently verified. Not self-reported.

The building envelope

Tighter envelope, lower bills, quieter rooms

We build airtight. The shell of the home is engineered to keep heat in during winter and out in summer. With high-performance insulation and quality windows, heating and cooling demand drops before the mechanical systems ever turn on.

  1. Less energy needed
  2. Lower operating costs
  3. Smaller footprint

Energy

Your roof makes electricity

We plan rooftop solar panels for every Symbio home, to generate electricity and offset power drawn from the grid. Paired with an all-electric mechanical system, the goal is zero greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), meaning the home produces no direct carbon emissions in operation.

Every current Symbio project is designed to the top level of BC's Zero Carbon Step Code, the province's zero-carbon standard.

Water

Water-conscious from roof to ground

Rain barrels collect water for the shared garden beds, and permeable landscaping lets rain soak into the ground rather than run off. Water-efficient fixtures cut consumption indoors, and pollinator-friendly planting needs little irrigation.

Materials and durability

Built to last, not just to look good

We specify durable, low-toxicity materials that age well in the Sea to Sky climate. That reduces maintenance and extends the building's useful life, so fewer resources are consumed over time. Low-toxicity finishes support better indoor air quality from day one.
